Carol, a Minneapolis based company, was founded in 2006. Its mission is to transform the delivery and financing of health care by ensuring that quality providers realize the financial benefit of delivering market-leading clinical performance. Carol is a full partner with its provider clients, applying the full set of strategies and solutions necessary to empower them to increase market share and become a financially successful Accountable Care Organization (ACO).
The Carol team is a multi-disciplinary group of health care professionals with extensive provider and payer experience and expertise in transitioning health systems from volume- to value-driven health care. The members of the Carol senior team are respected leaders in their areas of expertise. Carol Leadership Team
Tom Valdivia, M.D. - President
Tom Valdivia, a primary care physician and health informatics expert, is president of Carol. Tom is a well-respected expert and passionate advocate for reengineering health care from a volume- to value-based delivery system. He has been instrumental in the creation of a number of health care companies dedicated to driving high-value health care by aligning patient experience, cost of care and clinical outcomes.
Prior to Carol, Tom served as the chief medical officer at both Definity Health and Ingenix. At Definity Health, which was acquired by United Health Group, he led the strategic development and implementation of industry-leading, integrated member experience care management programs. Additionally, he devised and implemented Definity's provider network strategy, resulting in over 60 rental PPOs providing access in all 50 states. At Ingenix, Tom developed Clinical Care Groups (CCG), the software designed to improve the capabilities offered by Episode Treatment Groups and provide the foundation for commercial predictive modeling, plan performance and provider profiling solutions.
Tom received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and a master's degree in health informatics from the University of Minnesota.
Beth Hartquist, M.D. - Clinical Director
Beth is the Director of the clinical redesign team at Carol. She is a highly respected physician leader and sought after speaker on health care transformation and quality. Trained in internal medicine, Beth has worked in various settings, including hospital, major health system, consulting, regional network and individual clinics. Prior to coming to Carol, Beth served as chief of primary care at Park Nicollet Health Services, a large multispecialty integrated health system in Minnesota. Beth was responsible for clinical quality, governance and operations for the entire primary care practice, including 350 clinicians, 13 clinical departments, 20 primary care clinics and management of a $200 million budget.
During Beth's tenure, Park Nicollet was designated as the top performer in Minnesota Community Measurement. She improved quality by designing and operationalizing primary care clinical improvements in diabetes, coronary artery disease, hypertension and prevention, congestive heart failure, and the preoperative evaluation process. She focused on safety improvements and led the development and standardization of clinical processes utilizing lean methodology.
Beth received her bachelor's degree in natural sciences and mathematics from North Park University and Theological Seminary and her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine She received Lean Certification and was a leadership fellow in advanced training in lean methodology and organization strategic planning.
Glen Eiden - Chief Technology Officer
Glen Eiden is Carol's chief technology officer, and leads the engineering team for Carol. Glen has proven expertise in creating new technology assets that improve the way claims processing, clinical systems and revenue cycle management systems deliver value. Glen's ability to communicate a technology vision in the context of business value is critical to Carol's rapid development. Prior to joining Carol, Glen worked for UnitedHealth Group where he enhanced their consumer-driven platform; Medtronic where he worked on a specialty EMR and practice management system; and Definity Health where he held the role of lead architect. As a software consultant, Glen has built applications for Health Partners, UnitedHealth Group, Blue Cross Blue Shield and a variety of other brands outside the health care arena.
Glen received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota.
Matthew Wiandt - Engagement Director
Matthew Wiandt brings substantial product development and client relationship management experience to his broad portfolio at Carol. He has significant experience in both the health care and financial services industries. His understanding of the financing and delivery systems of health care combined with his knowledge of health plan actuarial requirements are invaluable assets in helping Carol's clients transition from volume- to value-based accountable care. Matthew's broad background has resulted in his involvement in both product development and client services' delivery at Carol. He is exceptionally skilled at enabling providers to leverage industry trends around payment reform and accelerating success under value-based contracts. Prior to Carol, Matthew served as director of product development at Definity Health.
Matthew received his master's degree in business administration from Case Western Reserve University.
Shawn Wagoner - Engagement Director

Shawn Wagoner serves as an Engagement Director at Carol and is dedicated to finding sustainable solutions to reward high-value health care. Shawn has successfully assisted large health systems assess their ability to deliver and be rewarded for value-based care, reevaluate and redefine their clinical integration vision, and operationalize the critical changes necessary to achieve that vision.
Prior to his Carol tenure, Shawn worked in the network management division of United Healthcare. Shawn was an officer in the U.S. Army before transitioning to health care. His military service included a tour of duty in Iraq.
Shawn is a graduate of West Point and received his master's degree from Harvard Business School.
Carol Product Team
Kristy Drollinger - Lead of Solutions Development
Kristy Drollinger leads the Provider Solutions team for Carol. She has a significant breadth of experience leading application development and infrastructure teams in multiple different technology organizations, including large health plans. At Carol Kristy has lead the design and implementation of clinical reengineering programs, and the definition and launch of several Provider solutions. The combination of clinical care delivery knowledge, technology development process, and technology and operational solutions design provide a unique foundation of knowledge and experience that are leveraged in Carol's market-leading solutions design.
Kristy received her bachelor's degree from the University of MN and her master's degree in business administration from St. Thomas University.
Adam Baker - Payment/Contracts Analyst
Adam has deep experience in financial modeling and is a valued member of the contracting redesign team at Carol and also serves as corporate finance counsel. He has worked as a financial analyst in various settings, including a health care venture capital/incubator fund and provider consulting firm. He has managed data analysis and financial modeling of multiple physician groups, hospitals and contract frameworks.
Adam received his bachelor's degree in history and his master's degree in business administration from the University of Iowa.
Matthew Chock - Payment/Contracts Analyst
Matt joined the Carol team after coming from HealthPartners, where he served as a provider relations and contracting manager. His experience, which is exclusively in the health care industry, is marked by success in contract strategy development, negotiations and management. In addition, he designed the financial models used by contract managers to analyze the financial impact of proposed contract rate changes. Matt is focused on creating innovative and efficient approaches to health care that will transform the future of care delivery.
Matt received his bachelor's degree in finance from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
Adam Bock, M.D. - Medical Informaticist
Adam is an internist and leading innovator in the value-driven health care movement. He designed and built several innovations, including transparency tools, incentives programs, message programs, gaps in care and disease grouper technologies during his tenure at Definity Health and Ingenix. He developed CIGNA's Well Informed Program, which scans claims for opportunities to improve quality and reduce cost. Adam is also a practicing physician at the Veteran's Hospital in Minneapolis where he practices part time in the internal medicine clinic as a staff doctor and is also a clinical instructor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.
Adam received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley and medical degree from the University of California, Davis. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Minnesota.
Eric Bargman, PhD - Client Clinical Analyst
Eric brings significant depth of research and analytical capability to Carol. He has had held leadership positions in both large payer and provider organizations in the Minneapolis market. Eric is well respected by the provider community for his ability to partner with them and develop strategies to measure and monitor change processes. He designed the prototype to identify patients for telephonic disease and case management by integrating data from medical claims, biometric screening and health assessment results. He was the lead analyst of provider cost and efficiency for Blue Cross Blue Shield's tiered product. During his tenure at HealthPartners he designed a treatment cost estimator for their health plan.
Deb Gabriel - Implementation and Diffusion Lead
Deb is one of the leaders in Carol's care redesign team and a well-respected change agent in the health care community. At Carol she works directly with provider teams to successfully execute their strategic care redesign objectives in a timely manner and with intended results at the clinic and hospital levels.
Prior to Carol, Deb held key leadership positions in both large payer and provider organizations. During her tenure as director of patient access strategies at Allina Health Systems, Deb developed an enterprise-wide blueprint for consumer access and integration into all areas of the health system. At Prudential Financial, she developed enterprise solutions that addressed significant systemic issues in the financial and legacy systems that directly impacted consumers. At United HealthCare, she was responsible for Strategic Operations for 21 health plans across the country.
Deb received her bachelor's degree and her master's degree in business administration from St. Thomas University. She earned certification in MIT Advanced Management Systems, TQM and has completed coursework in Lean Six Sigma.
